Point
Chevalier Athletes in the Athletics Auckland Aspire Development Academy

Several Point Chevalier athletes were kept busy in the
last week of the school holidays, having been selected in the inaugural
Auckland Athletics Aspire Development Academy.

The Academy is a new programme designed to:

  • Keep the best teenage Athletes in the Sport; and

  • Teach them about the transition required to go
from being a good Junior Athlete (under 15) to a Top Youth / Senior Athlete.

The Point Chevalier Clun members involved in the group of
30 athletes from across the Auckland region were Hinemoa Fonua, Oliver Miller
and Sabine O’Connor. Former long-time Pt Chevalier athletes Maiya Christini and
Ivanja Po’uhila (who have transitioned to senior clubs) also attended.

The athletes experienced four days of technical  tuition and training in their specialist
events as well as in the rules of athletics, weights, nutrition, warming up and
down and a presentation on drugs free sport. The coaches included personnel
from High Performance Sport New Zealand and World Junior 100m Hurdles medallist
    Joshua Hawkins.
